Having a finished basement comes with it’s share of concerns on whether you’re protected from unforeseen circumstances. We highly recommend Water Backup, also referred to as Sewer Backup, coverage.
What does Water Backup Coverage cover?
Water Backup coverage is an endorsement you can purchase on your Homeowners policy that provides coverage for water backup through a sewer, drain or sump pump. There are eligibility guidelines that must be met to qualify for this coverage, including prior water backup claims and whether you are in a flood zone. Most companies have multiple coverage limits for you to choose from. There is typically a waiting period to add this coverage, usually around 30 days.
What is NOT covered by Water Backup?
- It is important to remember that Water Backup coverage is NOT flood insurance. Some companies do offer flood coverage as an endorsement on your Homeowners policy. We also offer Flood policies through FEMA and private carriers.
- Water Backup also does not cover if water seeps into the basement through the foundation.
- Wear and tear are also not covered.
How do I determine how much coverage is right for me?
The limit you select for Water Backup coverage is the total limit for mitigation (having a restoration company do the cleanup and dry out), personal property and damage to the home itself like carpet, drywall, etc. Here are some things to consider:
- Is your basement finished?
- How much would it cost for a restoration company to clean up the water?
- Do you have a bathroom, furnace, water heater, washer, or dryer in your basement?
